The Western Cape is one of the most important food baskets in South Africa. The sheltered valleys provide ideal conditions for top-grade fruits, such as olives, apples, table grapes, oranges and peaches. A large variety of vegetables are cultivated in the eastern part of the Western Cape.
This province is known for being one of the world’s finest viticulture regions. The Klein Karoo region is the centre of the ostrich-farming industry in South Africa. The Swartland district around Malmesbury and the Overberg at Caledon are known for producing golden wheat.
Wool and mutton are produced around the inland Karoo region. Other animal products include dairy products, eggs, broiler chicken, beef and pork, while racehorse breeding is also an important industry.
The Western Cape is also considered one of the world’s richest fishing grounds.
