Being in the Eastern part of South Africa, Mpumalanga is bordered by the Mountain Kingdom of Swaziland and the tropical waters of the Mozambican coast in the East and by Gauteng in the West.
Mpumalanga falls mainly within the grassland and savannah biome. The Lowveld presents grasslands and bushveld, with a splendour of wildlife that changes to thick pristine ravines with beautiful waterfalls in the Escarpment and large open savannah plains in the Highveld.

|

Mpumalanga is a summer-rainfall region that enjoys ample rainfall with an average of 620mm rain between September and March.
Mpumalanga has comfortable temperatures that range, in the contrasting seasons, around 26 ºC in summer and 8 ºC in winter. The Western part of the region is much drier, hotter and colder than the rest of the province and thick mist during the hot humid summer is not uncommon.
|
|

The province boasts some of Africa's best super-highways, newest international airports, and cutting-edge specialist hospitals. Even the secondary road network, in the province's more remote districts, is on tarmac and well signposted.
Mpumalanga's major road artery is the East/West N4 highway, linking the megalopolis of Gauteng with the Mozambican port city of Maputo. It boasts SOS telephones every 5km, and is patrolled by a combination of private rescue services and traffic control. The capital, Nelspruit, is home to Mpumalanga's only international airport and currently operates scheduled daily flights to three neighbouring South African provinces, as well as Mozambique and Swaziland.

Nelspruit, being the second-largest citrus-producing area in South Africa, is responsible for one-third of the country’s export in oranges.
A variety of citrus fruit and subtropical fruits like mangoes, avocados, bananas, litchis, granadillas, guavas and pawpaws, as well as nuts are produced in this region. Sugar cane is also a major source of income.
The Groblersdal area produces a variety of products such as cotton, tobacco, wheat, citrus fruit and vegetables.
The Carolina-Bethal-Ermelo district is known for sheep farming. Sunflower seeds, maize, potatoes and peanuts are also produced in this district.
Mpumalanga is also known for having the largest paper mills in the country, as well as producing steel, vanadium and coal, with Witbank being the biggest producers of coal in Africa.
