A place of clear skies, overwhelming quiet and wide-open spaces, where you can smell the scent of herbs carried by the breeze and unexpectedly hear the call of the sea.  Quietly inviting you to come and discover the magic of Northern Cape!

This province lies to the south of its most important asset – the mighty Orange River – that provides the basis for a healthy agriculture.  With the cold Atlantic Ocean forming the western boundary, the Northern Cape is a place of vast plains with outcroppings of haphazard rock piles.

Being a dry region with fluctuating temperatures and differing topographies, its weather is typically that of desert and semi-desert areas. 

Summer is from December to February with temperatures in January reaching between 33°C and 36°C.  The day temperatures in winter (June-August) are mild (22°C) with cold evenings that are sometimes accompanied by dew and frost.

The Northern Cape is mostly a summer-rainfall region, receiving an annual rainfall of between 50mm-400mm.  The rains are often accompanied by heavy thunderstorms.

Major airports are situated in Kimberley, the capital, and Upington.  This province has an excellent road network which makes its interior easily accessible from South Africa’s major cities, airports and harbours.

Sheep farming plays a large part in the economy of the Northern Cape, especially in the interior Karoo.

One of the foremost agricultural activities in the Gordonia district of Upington is the karakul pelt industry.

Upington, Kakemas and Keimoes, which form part of the Orange River Valley, is intensively cultivated grape and fruit growing country.  The Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme near Warrenton produces wheat, fruit, maize, peanuts and cotton.

The Northern Cape is also extremely rich in minerals.
